PDF cropping is useful for removing scanner borders, print marks, excess whitespace, and inconsistent visible margins. It changes each page’s visible box while preserving the source page underneath, which is why sensitive content needs a dedicated redaction workflow instead.
Step by step
- Open and inspect the PDF
Check whether pages share one size and orientation or mix portrait, landscape, scans, and rotated sheets.
- Set the visible boundary
Drag the preview handles or enter top, right, bottom, and left percentages. Leave enough room for headers, footers, annotations, and print bleed.
- Choose the page scope
Use Current page for an exception, Page range for one section, or All pages only when the layout is consistent.
- Export and verify
Download the new copy and inspect representative pages at high zoom before replacing or distributing the original.
When cropping helps
- Scanned borders
- Remove dark scanner edges or uneven blank bands without rasterizing the document again.
- Excess whitespace
- Tighten pages for reading, presentation, or printing while retaining the underlying PDF content.
- Mixed layouts
- Crop only the exceptional pages or use a range rather than forcing one setting across the whole file.
- Sensitive information
- Do not rely on cropping. Use secure redaction and verify the exported file’s text and object layers.
Important limits
- Cropping changes the visible page box; cropped-away text, images, annotations, or objects may remain in the file structure.
- Crop is not redaction and must not be used to remove personal, confidential, legal, financial, or medical information.
- Applying the same percentages to differently sized or rotated pages can hide different amounts of content.
- Creating a modified PDF invalidates existing certificate-based digital signatures even when the visual change is small.

Does cropping permanently delete content outside the page?
Not necessarily. PDF crop boxes normally control what viewers display, while page objects can remain outside the visible area. Use verified redaction when information must be removed.
Can I crop only selected pages?
Yes. Choose Current page or Page range, enter pages such as 2-5, 8, and preview the relevant layouts before export.
Will links, searchable text, and forms remain?
The crop operation is designed to preserve the PDF’s existing content and change the visible boundary. Always verify interactive content and unusual page structures in the downloaded copy.
What happens to a digitally signed PDF?
Any saved modification changes the document bytes and invalidates existing certificate-based digital signatures. Keep the signed original as the authoritative copy.
